Answers to Frequently Asked QuestionsQUESTION: How do biodots work?
ANSWER: Biodots are made of heat sensitive material that changes color in response to changes in skin temperature. When you are stressed your capillaries constrict, reducing the flow of blood to the surface of the skin. That’s why your hands feel cold right before a job interview, or when you are about to get up and give a speech. The biodot simply acts as a thermometer, showing you the changes in temperature just beneath the surface of your skin. Biodots adhere to the back of your hand and change color as the flow of blood to your capillaries increases or decreases. Black means you’re stressed. Brown means you’re tense. Green means you are feeling calmer and blue means you are completely relaxed.QUESTION: How do biodots help people reduce stress?
ANSWER: As a rudimentary biofeedback device, biodots give you biological feedback about what’s going on inside your body. The information, or feedback that it gives you let’s you know whether your efforts have been successful. Say you were trying to meditate as a way of lowering stress. At the end of the twenty minute meditation period, how would you know whether your meditation had actually worked to help you relax? If you were wearing a biodot, and it had turned from black to blue you’d know that the temperature just beneath the surface of your skin had increased and (by deduction) you would know that your capillaries had opened up, that the blood flow had improved and that you had activated the relaxation response. That’s how biodots help people to reduce stress. By giving you feedback on internal functions of the body that you can’t detect in any other way.QUESTION: Are biodots just a gimmick?
ANSWER: NO In fact, a patent for a product that was similar to the patent for biodots, was originally held by Johnson and Johnson. Their product was used as a way of tracking skin temperature during surgery. But J&J sold the rights to inventor, Bob Grabhorn (see below) who had figured out a way to inexpensively mass produce them. Biodots accurately gauge skin temperature within a range of about 7-8 degrees. Biodots work best when used at normal room temperature which is about 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit. If a room is particularly cold or hot, or if you suffer from poor blood circulation, or if you’ve just come in from the cold, these variables can and do throw off the reading on your biddot.QUESTION: Who invented biodots?
ANSWER: Bob Grabhorn invented biodots in the form we now know them. He invented many other things which he patented including a square balloon, a delta wing that reduced drag on tractor-trailers and a floor mat for barbers to stand on that would reduce fatigue.QUESTION: What the difference between biodots and stressdots?
ANSWER: Both use the technology of liquid crystals, but biodots are actually more sensitive over a greater range of degrees.QUESTION: My biodot isn’t working. It just stays black. Why?
ANSWER: First, check to see if you are using the biodot at normal room temperature, between 70-75 degrees. If the room is below 70 the dot probably won’t change colors. Second, a lot of people these days carry low levels of stress all the time and don’t realize it. To find out if it’s you or the biodot, try holding your hand on your warm back, just below the neck. If your hand feels cold, it’s probably you. If you think it’s the biodot try running it under hot water or holding it up to a heat source like a light bulb, if it changes color, the biodot is working. Also, we’ve discovered that if the biodots get shipped in midwinter, and the dots sit out in the freezing cold for an extended period, this seems to put the dots into suspended animation. You can easily revive them by putting them near a radiator, or some other mild heat source.QUESTION: What is the shelf life of a biodot?
ANSWER: We usually tell people about a year, although we’ve pulled biodots out of the backs of drawers that have been stored for years and they seem to work just fine. It’s not the biodot that wears out. It’s the adhesive on the back. And it’s primarily the storage conditions that contribute to this deterioration of the adhesive. So don’t leave biodots stored in the sun, or in an excessively humid environment or excessively dry environment or stacked up on top of each other for months on end This will greatly reduce their shelf-life.QUESTION: Can you reuse a biodot after it’s fallen off?
ANSWER: YES After the stickiness has worn off, you can re-attach it, simply by taking a piece of scotch tape, and taping the biodot onto your skin.

Quick Stress Tips
Allow Extra Time
Time pressure is a major source of stress. Next time you snap at the kids, feel stressed in a traffic jam or get chewed out by your boss, look below the surface. Time pressure is often the culprit. To counteract this stressor, build in extra time for everything that you do: For kids who dawdle, for traffic that gets tied up and for assignments that often take longer than you think. When you take this simple advice to heart you'll be amazed at how much stress you'll avoid.
From The Blog
Most of us only have a vague notion of what is REALLY causing us to feel stressed. For example, when you say "my job is stressful," what does that mean? There could be any number of reasons why you feel that your job is stressful. One of the best ways to pinpoint exactly what is going on is to keep a journal or a log of anything and everything that stresses you for at least a week, preferably two.

Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until the discoveries of modern brain researchers, theorists could only guess why. Daniel Goleman's fascinating report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers us startling new insight into our "two minds" -- the rational and the emotional -- and how they together shape our destiny.
